Bridge Stamp
The Nicholson Heritage Association spearheaded an effort to request the United States Postal Service (USPS) to issue a commemorative stamp for the 100th anniversary of the Nicholson Bridge.
UPDATE: We received a reply from the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) stating that they had considered this subject at a previous meeting and determined that it is not eligible to be a commemorative stamp. You can view the response by clicking here.
While this is disappointing, the Advisory Committee does recommend that we resubmit the proposal after one year, which we intend to do, as the 100th anniversary will not be until 2015. In the meantime, we urge all supporters to continue to submit letters of support either to us or the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee directly. Click here for a sample letter that you can hand-sign directly or use as a model for writing your own letter of support. Once completed, dated and signed, please send letter to the Nicholson Heritage Association at P.O. Box 496, Nicholson, PA 18446.
Thank you to those that submitted letters of support! We received more than a thousand letters from supporters that included the Canadian Pacific Railway, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (PA Legislative Board), American Society of Civil Engineers, Endless Mountains Heritage Region, Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, Lackawanna Heritage Valley, Steamtown National Historic Site, Erie Lackawanna Historical Society, U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, U.S. Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr., U.S. Representative Chris Carney, State Senator Lisa Baker, State Representative Sandy Major, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the Ransom Township Supervisors, and the Wyoming County Commissioners.
The USPS receives stamp recommendations from its Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee which was established in 1975. For more information on CSAC and its established selection criteria, please visit: http://www.usps.com/communications/organization/csac.htm. After a proposed subject is determined not to violate the established criteria set by CSAC, the subject is listed on CSAC's agenda for its next meeting. CSAC considers all new proposals and takes one of two actions: it may reject the new proposal or it may set it aside for future consideration. If the proposal is rejected, it may be resubmitted, no sooner than one year after the rejection date. CSAC suggests that subjects be submitted at least three years in advance of the proposed date of issue.
At the end of January 2010, the Nicholson Heritage Association submitted all received letters of support to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee. Please click here to view the cover letter that was sent from the Heritage Association along with the more than a thousand letters of support.
